Anxiety Q & A

What is anxiety?

Anxiety consists of a group of mental health disorders that cause excessive feelings of worry that persist for longer than six months. Worries around work, school, health, finances, or relationships may be the root of your anxiety.

Although the cause is unknown, family history, brain chemistry, or current life circumstances may lead to anxiety.

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is the most common type of anxiety disorder, but anxiety can progress to panic disorder, where you have sudden panic attacks. Phobias are when you have extreme fear of things like insects, heights, places, or social situations (social anxiety).

What are the symptoms of anxiety?

Children and adults have similar emotional signs of anxiety, including:

  • Apprehension or dread
  • Irritability
  • Feeling tense or jumpy
  • Believing a situation is threatening when it isn’t
  • Overthinking
  • Restlessness
  • Indecisiveness
  • Difficulty concentrating

Physical signs of anxiety include:

  • Racing or pounding heart
  • Shortness of breath
  • Unexplainable fatigue
  • Nervousness, tremors, or sweating
  • Insomnia
  • Headaches or migraines
  • Muscle aches or pain
  • Upset stomach, diarrhea, or frequent urination

Children and adolescents may excessively worry about school or social situations and sometimes try to avoid them altogether.

What are my anxiety treatment options?

At Mindful Solutions Psychiatry, we take a personalized and medical approach to treating anxiety, focusing on accurate diagnosis and effective medication management to help you regain control and peace of mind.

Your provider will work closely with you to understand your symptoms, medical history, and any contributing factors before creating a customized treatment plan.

Medications & GeneSight Testing

Medications are a highly effective option for managing anxiety symptoms. These may include antidepressants and, when appropriate, short-term anti-anxiety medications.

Because every individual responds differently to medications, we offer GeneSight® testing, a genetic test that helps guide medication selection based on how your body may process certain drugs. This allows us to:

  • Reduce trial-and-error in finding the right medication
  • Improve treatment effectiveness
  • Lower the risk of unwanted side effects

Your provider will monitor your progress closely and make adjustments as needed. While some medications may take a few weeks to reach full effect, ongoing support ensures optimal results.

Supportive Care & Lifestyle Recommendations

In addition to medication management, your provider may recommend supportive strategies to enhance your overall well-being, such as:

  • Stress reduction techniques (e.g., mindfulness or journaling)
  • Regular physical activity
  • Healthy sleep habits
  • Balanced nutrition
  • Support groups or community resources

While we do not provide psychotherapy services in-house, we can offer referrals to trusted therapists if additional support is beneficial.

Advanced Treatment Options

If standard treatments are not effective, your provider may discuss advanced options and refer you to appropriate specialists for treatments such as TMS or other interventions.
